One year ago today Hugo Chavez sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer. The questions Hugo and his ideas posed went much further beyond the borders of Venezuela. The future of South America and its relationship with the United States and the West were given necessary reminders that American empire building will be met with a forceful collective fist in South America. Despite domestic and international opposition Chavez dismissed empty claims as to his lack of legitimacy as a President wit an electoral mandate a few recent US presidents could not boast. Alongside Evo Morales of Bolivia he made sure the case for ’21st Century Socialism’ gained a foothold in South America that badly needed it.
